“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke
As I sip coffee and chat with God—the One I cannot see but know is there because I experience a Presence I cannot understand—I ask a lot of questions.
I wonder if you are real, God, or a figment of my imagination?
In the Quiet, a silent whisper floods my soul like air flowing through a flute, and I hear that familiar voice whisper, “I Am here.”
I wonder if the chaos of the world will overtake humanity? Will artificial intelligence make us extinct?
I gaze out my window and notice sparrows dancing on the bird feeder and remember Christ promised he would be with us always, even until the end of time.
I wonder if my silly poems and words make any difference in the world?
My iPhone lights up with a text from someone who has discovered the gift of having daily coffee with the Creator, and I hear God whisper, “You do matter.”
I wonder if my small life will be enough to get me to heaven someday.
My heart responds, “Into your hands, Lord, I commend my Spirit,” and I trust those words spoken each day with my life point me to the road that’s taking me Home.
Do you sometimes ask questions that seem to have no answers? Do you bring to God those queries that puzzle you and rattle your heart?
Maybe our silly questions are not so silly. Perhaps asking those questions leads us to discover wise answers as we listen in the quiet, waiting for our hearts to hear a response—the ones that guide us Home.
Here’s to quiet time and asking silly questions—perhaps they’re not so silly after all.
