“Daddy, when are you coming home?” the little girl asked her father through the telephone line.
The man sat in his motel room a thousand miles away. As he wiped a tear from his eye, he responded, “I’m already there. Take a look around. I’m the beating in your heart. I’m the moon shining down. I’m the whisper in the wind, and I’ll be there until the end.”
Those words from the country western song, I’m Already There, by Lonestar sang in my heart one morning during Quiet Time. I was missing God. Looking for him somewhere. Somehow. Searching for him in another book, another class, another podcast. Out there.
As I sat in meditation, I placed my hands on my heart. Tears filled my eyes as the words became a love song from God.
There was a twist to them. I heard God whisper, “I’m already here. Here within your heart.”
I wept, not out of sadness, but rather out of joy. God is not only with me, God is in me.
He’s the beating in my soul. The breath within my lungs. He’s the warm embrace I feel. He’s the song that sings within. The whisper that guides me.
“Don’t look for me out there, Brian,” I heard the Creator remind me. “I’m in here. Closer than you can imagine.”
In those few moments, I came face-to-face with my Authentic Self—that part of me that’s already One with the Divine.
The Creator is in me. Always. And all I need do is draw my awareness back to that Inner Presence.
Come back to your heart.
Feel God within.
Hear his love song sing to you.
He’s already here.

PS—As I finished writing this reflection, a friend emailed me the following words. Maybe it’s Federal Express direct from the Creator to you and me.
